Act V
Rodrigo and Cassio Fight!
The fight between Cassio and Rodrigo is a no-lose situation for Iago because it doesn't matter if one of them dies. Rodrigo is threatening Iago because he is finding out that Iago didn't give Desdemona the gold and jewelry. Iago stole that from him and now Rodrigo wants to tell her the truth. It be better if Rodrigo dies. If Cassio dies, then Othello won't be able to question him about the affair. Either way, its in Iago's favor.
Trap!
Gratiano and Montano don't run and help first because they think it's a trap, because they are also on the darker parts of the town. They are governors of Cyprus, so they are targets. Since it is late at night and they are officers, it is not safe for them.
Accusation on Bianca
Iago implies that Bianca is involved on the attack because her and Cassio are romantically involved. Iago calls her a whore and says that she probably tried to kill him because shes a prostitute and possibly a killer. He tells her in front of Gratiano and Montano that she looks pale and guilty, and tries to frame her.
Deaths in the Play
The first person that dies in the play is Rodrigo. He gets hurt when Cassio strikes him in the ribs. Later on, when Iago returns with different clothes, he stabs in and kills him. Desdemona also dies when Othello strangles her in their bed because he thinks she committed an immoral sin. Emilia gets stabbed in her back by her husband Iago because she started telling the truth about the handkerchief and that Iago lied about the affair. Othello kills himself because he cannot live with the fact that he did this to his love.
Wounded Iago
Othello wounds Iago but does not kill him. He is happy with this result because he wants Iago to feel the pain that he gave him for the rest of his life He won't live that long but the rest of his life will be intolerable. His life is ruined because of the killings, reputation and serious injury.
Tragic Flaw
Othello's tragic flaw leading to his downfall was jealousy. His insecurity took over his mind and he killed the love of his life. Iago attacked on that flaw and brought it to life. After Othello acknowledged that he believed Iago, Iago uses his manipulations to control him and to make him want to kill his wife. Iago uses Othello's jealousy to kill Desdemona with his hands instead of poison.
Overall Theme in Othello
In my opinion, I believe that the overall moral of this play is to not to believe based on what you have heard. He should of stepped up for her instead of letting Iago walk all over him. Othello believed all the lies that Iago was telling him and that's what led to all the killings. He never asked Desdemona nor Cassio if the assumptions were true. Since he had this insecurity of her leaving him, he let it get to his head.
